Don’t try to meditate, just do it.

One of my favorite comedies is “Forgetting Sarah Marshall“. The whole movie is pretty hilarious…and clever…but there’s one scene that that always makes me laugh. It’s the scene where Kunu the surf instructor, played by Paul Rudd, is teaching Jason Segel’s character how to ride the waves. His advice is pretty simple…”Don’t try to surf, just do it”.

Here’s the scene. https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=youtube+forgetting+sarah+marshall+surf+lesson+kunu&mid=83AE568345DB42C02E5783AE568345DB42C02E57&FORM=VIRE

When you first start meditating, you’re taught things like “stop trying” and “forget setting meditation goals”. The idea is to sit quietly and focus on something simple like counting your breaths. Honestly it can be kinda frustrating. But, if you stick with it, just being aware of the present moment without evaluating how well you’re doing or how much progress you’ve made is incredibly liberating.

So next time you hit the meditation cushion, just remind yourself what Kunu says, “The less you do, the more you do.”

Read a Good Book… one of the best books I’ve read about meditation is “How to Meditate” by Pema Chodron. You can get the book here on Amazon. How to Meditate: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Mind: Chödrön, Pema: 9781604079333: Amazon.com: Books
